Archibald Royce (1782-1846)
Potsdam, NY area, the
Bacon Cemetery
The cemetery may have also been called the Hinman Cemetery.
(grave located by NY cousin Ben Royce)
(I have no ground-level photos of the cemetery or of grave markers)

Archibald was the husband of Anna Gilmore Royce (1781-1861).  Archibald was born in Vermont and Anna was born in Jaffrey, Cheshire, New Hampshire on 18 July 1781.  Archibald died on 8 April 1841 at Crary Mills, Saint Lawrence Co., NY.  Anna died on 8 May 1861, probably in Potsdam.  At the time of the 1860 US census Anna was living with her son Harry and his family in Potsdam.

We have no burial information about Anna Gilmore Royce.
Archibald is Chris' GGGG Grandfather.

Archibald is Chris' GGGG Grandfather.  He is the husband
of Anna Gilmore Royce.  Anna's gravesite has not been found.
Their son John Royce, Chris' GGG Grandfather is buried at the
nearby White Church Cemetery near Pierrepont.

The Bacon Cemetery near Potsdam, NY.  Named after the Bacon family, many of
whom are buried here.   (Anne Cady photo)

The spot marked may be the location of the Bacon Cemetery in this aerial photo.
This corresponds to the spot marked as a cemetery on the topographic map
(see map below).  The marked spot is about 3.8 miles
NW on Hwy 345 from the
junction of Hwy 345 and US Hwy 11 near Potsdam.
The map coordinates are about:
44 41.87 N  75 3.546 W  .

A close topographic map view of the cemetery area.  The small stream that
crosses under Hwy 345 is about 200 ft from the west margin of the cemetery.
The cemetery's dimensions as measured from the topo map are 149 ft x 205 ft.
The longer side is parallel to the roadway, Hwy 345.  The cemetery is at the 360 ft
elevation contour interval on the map.

The possible location of the Bacon Cemetery is near Pig Street, I guess that makes
sense.  It is at the center of this topographic view where it is marked "Cem."  Pig
Street is just left (0.38 miles west) of the cemetery and Flat Rock Road/Barker Road is
somewhat to the right (0.75 miles east).

some of my notes:

Archibald Royce (1782-1846) and Anna Gilmore Royce (1781-1861)(Anna burial unknown)
Bacon Cemetery, Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. (Archibald only)
Bacon Cemetery was also called Hinman Cemetery located in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York.

directions from a website: St.Hiwy. 345/2.5 miles from Potsdam towards Madrid [therefore NW]
I could find no cemetery on topo maps that is 2.5 miles NW of Potsdam
The cemetery given below, at 3.8 mi from Potsdam, is the only Hwy 345 cemetery near Potsdam.

The cemetery may be at   44 41.87 N  75 3.546 W  (3.8 mi NW of Potsdam)

A place that is marked as “cemetery” on topo maps is 3.82 miles NW on Hwy 345 from the junction of Hwy 345 and US Hwy 11 near Potsdam.

It can also be measured as being 1.33 miles W of CR-14 (State St) on Hwy 345 or 0.75 miles W of Barker Rd/Flat Rock Rd.

From Ben Royce 6/9/07 [annotated by me] [Ben has visited the gravesite.]

The Bacon Cemetery is located outside of Potsdam, New York. If traveling from Canton, New York go to the first light by the Clarkson College (on right) and turn left to Agway (on left) [Agway is a store at 14 Pine Street (Hwy 345)(approx. 44 40.067 N  74 59.667 W] follow that road [Hwy 345 to NW] to you see the cemetery on the right side [north side] of the road. Have to park car on the side of the road. Go in the gate and go left to the big pointed head stone of the Foot(e)  near the woods the Royce's are to left of it . It is a small cemetery not hard to find the stones. Some may be laying down or broke I have not seen it a while...

We do not know any ancestors of either Archibald or Anna yet.  It is possible that Archibald descended from Edmund Rice (born 1594 in Stanstead, Suffolk, England).  This possible connection was made with DNA an almost-exact match of Chris' Y-DNA and Y-DNA of known descendants of Edmund Rice.

The Y-DNA data are given elsewhere on this website.
