Nellie, or Nell, was born Ellie Hanrahan Feb. 25,
1886 in Kilbaha South, Moyvane,
County Kerry, Ireland and died on Feb. 2, 1936, age 49, in San Francisco.
Nellie as listed as 14-year-old
Ellie Hanrahan in the 1901 Irish Census. She was
living in her parents' home in Kilbaha South, County Kerry, Ireland.
She immigrated via Ellis Island arriving on the passenger ship Celtic on September 29,
1906. Her first residence was in New York City where she worked as a nurse in Bellevue
Hospital for one year. She then went to San Francisco to join Irish relatives and friends
there. Nellie worked as a nurse in the Hahnemann Hospital for several years, where
she met her future husband, Percy A. Sargent. In the US Census for San
Francisco
"Nelly Hanrahan" was listed as a nurse at the Hahnemann
Hospital.
By the time of the 1920 census
Percy and Nellie were married and had a 9-month old son
and were living at 2257 Steiner St., San Francisco. In the 1930 US census
Percy and
Nellie were listed as living at 833 Baker St. in San Francisco and had listed as
children:
Benjamin (10), Elizabeth (8), John (6), Alice (5) and Nellie [Theresa] (2).
